Our school is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an increasingly digital and innovative world. That’s why we continue to implement Version 8.4 of the Australian Curriculum for Technologies, which encourages creativity, problem-solving, and practical thinking across a range of real-world contexts.
The Technologies curriculum is made up of two key subjects:
1. Design and Technologies
In this subject, students learn how to design and create solutions to real-life problems using materials, tools, and processes. They explore how products, services, and environments are developed, and they work on hands-on projects that involve planning, making, testing, and evaluating.
Key skills include:
Generating and communicating design ideas
Using digital and physical tools safely and effectively
Understanding sustainability and the impact of technology on the environment and society
2. Digital Technologies
This subject focuses on teaching students how digital systems work and how information is created, processed, and used. It goes beyond using technology—it teaches students how to design and build digital solutions, such as simple programs, apps, or data displays.
Key skills include:
Understanding how computers and networks operate
Learning basic coding and programming
Managing and analysing data
Problem-solving using computational thinking
What makes Version 8.4 of Technologies valuable?
It helps students become confident and capable users of digital tools, not just consumers.
It develops critical and creative thinking, preparing students for jobs of the future.
It encourages collaboration and innovation, as students work on projects both individually and in teams.
The curriculum is age-appropriate, building foundational knowledge in primary school and more complex skills in later years.
Our teachers are delivering engaging, practical lessons that help students apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. Whether it’s coding a basic program, designing a sustainable product, or understanding how a system works, Technologies encourages students to think, create, and problem-solve.
Students at Thornlands receive Technologies specialist classes from Prep - YEar 4.
