What Parents Need to Know: New Mathematics Curriculum (Version 9.0)
We’re pleased to let you know that our school is now teaching Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum for Mathematics, which brings a fresh, focused, and future-ready approach to how students learn maths.
This updated curriculum keeps all the core skills—like number facts, problem solving, and algebra—but presents them in a more logical and connected way. It helps students build a deeper understanding of maths concepts and apply them in real-life situations.
The curriculum is organised into six key areas:
Number: Developing strong number sense, including place value, operations, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Algebra: Exploring patterns, relationships, and expressions—building the foundation for higher-level mathematics.
Measurement: Understanding and working with length, area, volume, time, and other measurable attributes.
Space: Learning about shapes, position, angles, and how objects move and fit together in space.
Statistics: Collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to make informed decisions.
Probability: Exploring chance, likelihood, and predicting outcomes in a logical way.
What’s new in Version 9?
The content is more clearly organised and age-appropriate, helping students progress step by step.
There’s a stronger focus on reasoning, problem solving, and applying maths—not just getting the right answer.
It includes practical, real-world contexts to make learning maths more meaningful.
The curriculum encourages students to use technology thoughtfully, such as calculators and spreadsheets, to support their learning.
Our teachers are working closely together to plan lessons that reflect these changes and ensure that each student is supported to succeed. Professional development and collaborative planning are helping us make a smooth transition.
