Our school follows Version 8.4 of the Australian Curriculum for Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), which gives students a strong foundation in understanding people, places, history, and society. HASS helps students make sense of the world around them and prepares them to be informed, thoughtful, and active citizens.
In primary school (Foundation to Year 6), HASS is taught as an integrated subject covering four key areas:
History – Students explore the past, learning about significant people, events, and how life has changed over time in Australia and the world.
Geography – Students investigate places and environments, looking at how people interact with their surroundings and the importance of sustainability.
Civics and Citizenship (Years 3–6) – Students learn about democracy, rules and laws, and how people participate in their communities and government.
Economics and Business (Years 5–6) – Students explore how resources are used, how decisions are made, and how people work and trade in the economy.
What makes Version 8.4 of HASS valuable?
It builds critical thinking and inquiry skills by encouraging students to ask questions, conduct research, analyse sources, and form conclusions.
It helps students understand the rights and responsibilities of living in a democratic society.
It promotes intercultural understanding, including the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.
The curriculum is designed to be age-appropriate and engaging, with topics that connect to students' own lives and experiences.
Our teachers use hands-on activities, discussions, projects, and digital tools to bring HASS to life in the classroom. By learning about the past, present, and future, students develop a deeper appreciation for the world and their place in it.
