​​Teaching and learning

In addition to our core curriculum, we offer a range of programs to develop, extend and enrich the learning opportunities of our students. These programs are offered at various times and are regularly reviewed.
 
  • Extensive Music Program – instrumental (strings, brass, woodwind, percussion), school band and choirs
  • Gifted and Talented program- Thornlands Thinkers
  • Active Student Representative Council
  • Excursions and incursions designed to enhance classroom learning

Specialist Lessons

  • A number of specialist teachers provide lessons in the areas of:
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE) - Japanese for Year 5 Chinese for Year 6
  • Dance Team

Assessment and reporting

At Thornlands State School, our teachers use a variety of standardised and diagnostic assessments to diagnose learning needs, determine achievement and inform teaching. Students are also assessed throughout and at the end of a unit of work to determine their overall understanding of the topic, these assessment pieces are moderated across the year level to ensure consistency. Students in years 3 and 5 participate in National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).
Written report cards are issued twice yearly, using a five point scale to report student achievement. Parent teacher interviews are offered in Terms 2 and 4. A variety of assessment pieces are used to demonstrate student learning and inform end of semester reporting.
 

Religious Education

Religious Instruction classes are available at the school. These classes are conducted once a fortnight on Wednesdays for 30 minutes. Students are allocated to these classes in accordance with the information provided on the completed Parent Notice for Religious Instruction (PDF, 83KB). This information remains operational unless the parent informs the school otherwise in writing.

Students who do not participate in religious instruction will undertake individual revision and consolidation work.
