What Parents Need to Know: New English Curriculum (Version 9.0)

We’re excited to share that our school is now using Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum for English, bringing fresh updates to how English is taught and learned in every classroom.

This new version keeps the strengths of the previous curriculum but improves clarity and focus. It’s designed to help students build strong communication skills—like reading, writing, speaking, and listening—which are essential for learning and everyday life.

The curriculum is organised into three key areas:

  • Language: Students learn how English works, including grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and how language changes depending on who they’re talking to or what they’re writing.

  • Literature: Students explore a wide range of stories, plays, poems, and texts—from Australian classics to global voices. There’s a strong focus on recognising the importance of First Nations Australian stories and perspectives.

  • Literacy: Students practise using English to understand, create, and communicate ideas clearly—skills they’ll use across all subjects and in real-world situations.

What’s new in Version 9?

  • It’s more streamlined and easier for teachers to use when planning and assessing.

  • There’s a greater focus on critical thinking, digital literacy, and understanding different cultures.

  • The content is better aligned across year levels to help students build their knowledge step by step.

Our teachers are already working hard to make sure this new curriculum fits seamlessly into the classroom. They’re taking part in training and planning sessions so that your child gets the best learning experience possible.
