It is with pleasure I announce the appointment of Mrs Kym Amor to the permanent role of Principal for Thornlands State School commencing in Term 2 2023.
Mrs Amor comes to us with extensive experience as a Principal in both primary and secondary schools. She spent 7 years as a primary principal at highly regarded schools including Mansfield State School and Stretton State College, before accepting the privileged role of Foundation Principal in 2019 at one of Queensland's newest Colleges, Foxwell State Secondary College, Coomera, on the Gold Coast.
For her work in Education across the Gold Coast, she was awarded the Gold Coast Woman of the Year for 2022. She is a passionate advocate against Domestic and Family Violence and currently sits on the Qld Government's Respectful Relationships Advisory Board. Awarded the title of Education Queensland's 2022 Wellbeing Champion, she provides advice and strategies to ensure that the health and wellbeing of staff, students and community members remains a priority focus in schools across Qld.
Mrs Amor has also held the roles of Director of the Metropolitan Region, and Principal Advisor in the Department's Disability, Student Behaviour, Student Protection and Learning and Wellbeing branches. Mrs Amor began her teaching career locally at Wellington Point State High School before moving to Mount Isa to work with remote families through Mount Isa School of the Air's Distance Education. With over 25 years of educational leadership behind her, we are excited that she will be working with us for the long-term success of Thornlands State School.
Some of our staff and students have already had the opportunity to meet Mrs Amor when she spent a number of weeks with us earlier this year, during her recovery from serious injuries to both her feet. Her feet are now recovered sufficiently to allow her to be back at work full time, however it was on doctor's direction that she relocate to a school closer to her home so that she can continue treatment. Mrs Amor is also happy for us to share that she made the personal decision to leave her much loved Foxwell SSC so that she could be closer to her family and to her father who she cared for in her home, (and who sadly passed away last week). When she was here at Thornlands SS she spoke openly about her love for primary education and it is no surprise that she is back leading a primary school, as this is her true passion.
Mrs Amor wanted to clarify that she was not aware of her potential relocation to our school when she was being hosted here at Thornlands. It was soon after leaving to work on a project for the department that the offer was made to her, and of course she was delighted to accept as she knew she wanted to lead and contribute to her local school community, one whose vision and values so closely align to hers.
Mrs Amor has met with the leadership team this morning and reinforced that she was extremely impressed with the staff, students, and community of Thornlands. Her educational vision aligns very closely with ours and the Department's focus on Equity and Excellence, so there is no doubt that the future of Thornlands State School is in safe hands.
We look forward to Kym starting with us from Day 1 Term 2 2023. I am sure that you will make her feel very welcome in our school.
Kind regards,
Kristy Warriner
