At Thornlands we place great importance on reading as we believe it is a vital skill that each child requires in order to succeed throughout their lives. A wonderful quote by famous children's author Tomi De Paola states beautifully how reading can impact on your child's learning,
"Reading is important because, if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything".
In Week 2 of this term, Thornlands State School participated in the STEAMATHLON event. STEAMATHLON is an academic triathlon for students in Years 5 and 6. In teams of four, students competed against other schools across tasks that are centred on Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). There were seven local schools who competed in this event. All challenges in the STEAMATHLON were designed in partnership with Sea World.
This year we had two teams of students represent Thornlands State School - a Year 6 team (Emi, Kaelan, Jack and Savannah) and a Year 5 team (Katie, Gus, Lucille and Lilith). These students were highly motivated and worked extremely hard throughout Term 3 and the beginning of Term 4 on a research task and a performance on their findings. Independently, the teams wrote scripts, created a performance, investigated and researched information all about the STEAMATHLON theme of 'Mangroves – the Ocean's Nursery'.
The STEAMATHLON students will be presenting their performances to the school and receiving their certificates on assembly in Week 5. A huge congratulations to Emi, Jack Kaelan, Savannah, Gus, Lilith, Katie and Lucille, as the Year 6 team won first place, and the Year 5 team won second place. An outstanding result for these students and our school!

STEAMATHLON Poster Competition
The STEAMATHLON Poster Competition was held during Term 3. It was wonderful to have so many students participate and enter creative posters on the theme 'Mangroves – the Ocean's Nursery'.
The winners will receive their certificates and prizes on assembly in Week 5. There are also three students who will be receiving an Artistic Award for submitting an amazing creative poster, and they will receive their certificate on assembly as well. All other students who participated in the poster competition will receive a Participation certificate that will be handed out by their class teacher.

INNOVATE Redland City STEM Competition
On Friday 15 October, Thornlands State School participated in the 2021 INNOVATE Redland City STEM Competition. INNOVATE aim is to develop and encourage STEM-related skills through science investigation projects, video-game coding and exciting robotics challenges for students from Years 5-8, in schools within Redland City.
Thornlands State School had two Year 6 student teams participate in the Video-Game competition. Cameron, Caelin, Sam and Ellie spent many hours designing and coding to create a video game. Each game created was required to follow a theme and meet the competition's criteria. Cameron and Caelin designed a game about electric circuits called “Electro Bite", and Sam and Ellie designed a game about recycling called “Recycle Run".
On the day, both teams presented their game to a panel of judges, and had a chance to play other video games, watch a Science show and test out a variety of Robotics equipment.
The INNOVATE students will be presenting their video games and receiving their certificates on assembly in Week 6. Congratulations to the Cameron, Caelin, Sam and Ellie for their effort and dedication in creating their video games!
