As a new offering at Thornlands this year, the Chess Club, which lies under the umbrella of Thornlands Thinkers has been consolidating.
Last week we named our two Chess Captains, Aaron B and Jaxon W, and took 2 x teams of 4 to experience their first Inter-school Chess Tournament conducted by Gardiner Chess at Churchie (ACGS) for Brisbane South. There were over 250 players.
As tournament chess was new to all of our students we entered Thornlands Thinkers 1 in to C grade and Thornlands Thinkers 2 into D Grade.
The outcome of the day was enjoyable for all. Mrs Mi Mi guided the students to great success. Congratulations to Harrison P who was the Gold Medalist individually in D Grade and well done to Thornlands Thinkers 2 (Harrison, Sapphire, Jed and Chris) who achieved 2nd place in the division and took home ribbons and silver medals. Thornlands Thinkers 1 (Zwe, Aaron, Jaxon, Andre), in C grade also took home ribbons, which is a great achievement, as to receive a ribbon you have to accumulate 4.5 points or more out of a possible 7.
Not only did the group have great success in game play but they conducted themselves admirably.
Next term we will open the Chess club to include students in Year 2 and 3 who might like to learn to play, The club meets on Tuesday mornings at 8am in the library with Mrs Green or Mrs Mi Mi and then also meets at 2nd break on Monday with Mr Dart and 2nd break Thursday with Mrs Mi Mi.
