Library lessons this term have a focus on Non-Fiction, with students learning about how to find information in books and on websites. It has been lovely seeing the excitement on many students faces when they find a book on a topic they are interested in. Could you please make sure your child in Prep-Year 3 remembers their library book and bag each week for library lessons. Students in Years 4-6 are encouraged to visit the library during lunch breaks or our senior borrowing session on Friday afternoons from 2:20-3:00pm.

Book week 2020

Book week this year will be during Term 4, with the theme being ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’. We are looking forward to celebrating with activities in the Library, an author visit and exploring the shortlisted books in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

There are still four weeks left to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge!

Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities. This challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning.
This year, the Premier has challenged all students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 and 6 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books.
In recognition of their efforts, students who complete the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland. Students who participate but don’t complete the challenge will receive a Certificate of Participation from the school. These certificates will be presented during celebration weeks in November.
The PRC reading period commenced on Monday 11 May and closes Friday 28 August. It is not too late to join if you haven’t started yet. Download the parent note  and the reader record form to get started or ask your child to visit the library to pick one up.

SORA Reading App
It has been wonderful having students utilising the library iPads during lunch breaks to borrow and read books online through the eBooks Digital Library.
The eBooks Digital Library is where all students have 24/7 access to eBooks and audio books. Notes were sent home at the beginning of the year with student login details. If you require more information or you are having any trouble logging in please email library@thornlandsss.eq.edu.au
